Mudumalai National Park, also known as Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, is located in the northwestern part of the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, on the border of Karnataka and Kerala. It was established in 1940 and is the first forest reserve in South India. Initially, the reserve had an area of 60 sq km. It was expanded to 295 sq km in 1956 and has been further extended to its current area of 321 sq km. The national park has also been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
