KodaikanalΒ is a municipality and hill station located in the Dindigul district of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated at an altitude of 2,225 meters (7,300 feet) in the Palani Hills of the Western Ghats. Kodaikanal was established in 1845 as a refuge from the high temperatures and tropical diseases prevalent in the plains during summer. It is a popular tourist destination and is often referred to as the "Princess of Hill Stations." Much of the local economy is based on the hospitality industry, which serves tourism. According to the 2011 census, the town had a population of 36,501.
